Fall Home Maintenance Tips
The chilly air is coming in quick to East Tennessee and that means Fall is close behind the lingering days of Summer! Get your house ready for the colder seasons with our Fall Home Maintenance Tips! Whenever seasons change, so does your home. Be prepared as the cold months come quickly and refer to this helpful guide. Now is the perfect time to make any necessary changes to your home while the weather is still nice. Summer has taken its toll, and Winter will surely be much harsher! So take a free weekend to inspect your home and go through a checklist of home maintenance preparations with these tips!
Exterior
Start by inspecting the exterior of your home, which is the most exposed part of your home to many different outside elements. First, check for any cracks in your foundation. Next, check for any peeling or blistering paint that the sun & rain might have caused to the exterior of your home. We recommend vinyl siding as an easy solution to this home maintenance tip. Siding is VERY low maintenance and you will not have to worry about repainting each year. Then, check your roof for any missing shingles – you don’t want leaks during the winter! Clear out your gutters because those Fall leaves are about to fall everywhere and clog up everything! Most importantly, check your windows and doors for any air leaks or cracks. Heating and cooling amount to 47% of your home’s energy costs. If your windows and doors are drafty, consider replacement windows or doors to save up to 20% on heating/cooling costs and save an annual amount of 10% on your energy bills.
Interior
Again, check your windows and doors; sometimes you can’t notice from the outside, the draft and cracks on the inside. Also make sure your windows are able to open and close properly and door hinges aren’t hanging or loose. Check or install storm doors. Next, check your home’s smoke alarms; make sure they are working and have lasting batteries or you have back up batteries on hand. Change and check your air filter! This is a step many of us can easily forget, but do not neglect it. Vacuum your air filter cage and rid your home of unwanted dust because allergy season is enough to handle already. While you’re at it, check to make sure your air conditioner is also working properly. And finally, check your humidifiers. As the colder months approach, you want to make sure your humidifier isn’t filled with mold from the previous year, or else you will be misting mold spores all throughout your home.
